Why are some iPhone photos missing when I import them to Windows?
What's going on
Optimize iPhone Storage is how a 128 GB phone holds a 300 GB library: Apple keeps the “original, high-resolution version” in iCloud and leaves a space-saving copy on the device, starting with the photos you open least. When Windows asks the phone for its photos over USB, the ones that are only in iCloud either don't show up or fail part-way.
Other things people run into on Microsoft's and Apple's forums: the iPhone was locked or “Trust This Computer” wasn't accepted, or a very large import stopped with “Something went wrong.” Those are worth ruling out, but if older photos and long videos are the ones missing, it's almost always the iCloud originals.
Fix 1: put the originals back on the phone
- Check free space firstSettings › General › iPhone Storage. You need roughly as much free space as your photo library uses in iCloud.
- Switch to originalsSettings › [your name] › iCloud › Photos › Download and Keep Originals.
- Wait for the downloadKeep the phone on Wi-Fi and the charger, with the Photos app open. A big library can take hours; the bottom of the Library view shows progress.
- Import againReconnect, unlock, tap Trust, and import with the Windows Photos app. Importing in smaller date ranges is less likely to stall.
Fix 2: when the phone doesn't have room
This is the common dead end: the library is bigger than the phone. You can get the originals from iCloud instead — select and download them on iCloud.com in batches, or install iCloud for Windows and let it download your library to the PC. Both work; both are slow for tens of thousands of items and you'll need to check that everything arrived.
PixLaundry takes a different route. On the iPhone it asks Photos for each original — downloading it from iCloud if needed — and streams it over your home Wi-Fi to the free receiver on your PC, one file at a time. You don't switch the whole library to Download and Keep Originals first, and each file is fingerprint-checked on both ends. Next time, only new photos go.
FAQ
Will switching to Download and Keep Originals delete anything?
No. It only downloads full versions to the phone. Switch back to Optimize later if you need the space again.
Does iCloud Photos turn my photos into lower quality?
No. The originals stay full quality in iCloud; only the copies on the phone are smaller. The trouble is just that a cable import sees the phone, not iCloud.
My videos are missing but photos are fine.
Optimize frees space starting with the items you open least, and old long videos free the most space, so they're often the ones that are iCloud-only. The same fixes apply.
